Gardening is a great hobby to have. Growing your own plants and vegetables is incredibly satisfying and it’s the perfect way to spend a sunny afternoon. What most people don’t realize is that it’s so much more than that. As well as all of the enjoyment that you’re getting out of it, gardening is actually improving your health in so many different ways. Even if you aren’t that interested in gardening as a pastime, maybe you should consider it because it brings these health benefits.

Stress And Anxiety
High stress levels are becoming a natural feature of so many people’s lives and they’re leading to a huge spike in the number of people suffering from anxiety and other stress-related illnesses. Reducing those stress levels is the key to a happy life and gardening can help you with that. Gardening at the end of the day has been proven to reduce mental fatigue and stress levels. When compared with other stress reducing activities, gardening comes out on top. It can be very therapeutic to keep a very neat garden because it offers a level of control in your life that you might be missing elsewhere.
This blog post has great information on the best gardening equipment to help you make your garden immaculate. You can also use your garden to fight depression both through the stress reducing elements but also in the food that you grow. Eating fresh vegetables from the garden that are packed full of nutrients is a great way to improve your mental health. Chard, tomatoes and blue potatoes are just some of the great vegetables that you can try and they don’t take up much space so even if you’ve got a small garden, you can still reap the benefits.
Reduces The Risk Of Heart Disease
Reduced stress levels massively improve your heart health and so do other aspects of gardening. As you get older it’s important to stay active but strenuous sports and exercise can be a little too much. Gardening doesn’t seem like it would be great exercise but it’s actually fairly active. While you aren’t doing lots of aerobic exercises, you’ll be bending down and standing up a lot, digging, and lifting things so it gives your body a good overall workout but it isn’t too intensive so there’s no risk of hurting yourself. Again, eating the food that you grow in your garden is great for heart health as well.

It Keeps Your Mind Sharp
Studies into Alzheimer’s have found that people that do gardening regularly have a reduced risk of developing memory problems and cut the chances of getting Alzheimer’s by around 50 percent. The exercise aspect of it helps and so does the general running of the garden. Planning and planting your garden takes a lot of brain power so it keeps your mind more active than other passive activities like watching television. Exercising your mind is the best way to fight the risk of memory problems in later life. You can also grow plenty of vegetables like beetroot, broccoli and celery that are all proven to improve your memory.
Gardening is a great way to spend your time and it improves your health at the same time so everybody should get involved right away.
