MOving house with kids

*This is a collaborative post.

There’s a reason that they say that moving house with kids is one of the most stressful things you can do in life, it’s because it honestly is! Think about it objectively for a minute, you’re taking every single item you’ve accumulated over years and years, picking it up and moving it to somewhere completely different, somewhere new. You may be also moving jobs, schools, leaving behind friends or family – it’s a lot.

Now add in a young family, children and pets, it’s an extra layer of stress! But don’t worry, we’re not here to freak you out, we’re actually here to make things a lot easier. This article is a reminder that you don’t win any medals for doing things the hard way. If there’s a shortcut and you can afford it, take it!

Skip the Uncertainty of Selling

One of the hardest parts of moving house is having to wait around, not sure whether or not your sale is going to go through. When a chain breaks in the final stages it can be catastrophic, especially if you’ve got new schools lined up, so wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could skip this layer of stress altogether? You can if you opt to sell your house through cash house buyers. You’ll get a guaranteed price, money in the bank quickly and you can set your own completion date, so you know exactly where you stand.

Have Someone Else Do Your Packing

Removal firms will physically move your belongings, but did you know that most will also offer a packing and unpacking service? If you can afford to pay extra for this then it can save you a huge amount of time and effort. They will bring all of their own boxes – even cardboard wardrobes for your clothes – and they’ll do everything for you. You don’t need to worry about how you’re going to juggle entertaining your kids at the same time as sorting and packing.

Accept Help from Friends and Family

As strange as it sounds, this one can often be the most difficult, as we’re programmed to believe that it’s better to struggle on alone than ask for help. The truth is that most people, if they care about you, will be only too happy to help you. The key is to ask people for help that plays to their strengths. Have a friend that loves to cook? Ask them if they’d be happy to prepare you some meals to tide you over while you get your kitchen organised.

Embrace the Chaos!

Moving home is always going to involve a lot of mess and chaos, so there’s no point beating yourself up about it and setting yourself unrealistic standards. The easiest way to tame your anxiety is simply to embrace the mess, ride the rollercoaster and just take each day at a time. No one is going to be judging you so you might as well enjoy not having to keep the house tidy for once!

  1. When we moved here my girls were not that young but embracing the chaos of it all did make things less stressful, we were fine living out of boxes for a little while. x
