When we first moved in to our home, pre kids, we were so impressed with the generous sized rooms. Everything had a place and all was organised, just how I like it. However when the little ones came along, the space was slowly consumed by the extra furniture and copious amounts of toys, as I am sure all parents can relate to. With a little thought and planning, we managed to retrieve that space and open up the rooms once again! Here are some ideas of how to go about it.
5 Ways To Maximise Space In Your Home
1 Fitted Storage Under Your Stairs
So much space goes to waste under the stairs so why not utilise that space and get some fitted storage units to make use of. This way you can store things from other rooms and be more organised.
2 Convert Your Loft

This is a no brainer. Make the most of that loft space and convert it into an extra bedroom or study. This is also an excellent way to add value to your home.
3 Extend
Is your kitchen just so tiny that you are standing on each others feet when it comes to meal times? Kitchen orangeries are the perfect solution to add some depth into an existing room, that is if you own your property and are not a tenant. Not only will it give you more floor space, it will let in more light too. Being truly bespoke with a choice of materials and colours, it will blend in perfectly against your home.
4 Mirrors
One of the easiest and cheapest ways to open up a room is to use mirrors. Used creatively they can give the illusion of space, as a result, making the room feel instantly bigger.
5 Lighten up
Painting rooms in white paint, reflects the light, giving a much more open feel to any room. Try to avoid dark colours in small spaces, it will only appear to close the room in further. Of course, you could still inject a pop of colour using some wall art or a couple of funky accessories.

There you have it, 5 ways to maximise space in you home.

We live in a rental, so are limited in what we can do. But all the walls are white, which is great – will try to hang some more mirrors 🙂
I live in a flat so stairs don’t exist and I can’t extend but I do think having white walls as a backdrop makes a big difference x
Some fab tips here I think that loft conversions are a biggie and if you have the space, finance and planning permission then it’s a gamechanger!
I agree that mirrors definitely make rooms look bigger which reminds me I need to get a new one as my old one broke ! x
We live in Paris, in a nice, large apartment for Paris, but I do miss our garden. People over here manage to live in really small spaces. I miss our London house, and we have a loft extension on the cards when we get back, thanks for the tips.
I am someone whose totally obsessed with having lots of space in my home, I live in an apartment now and normally these dont have enough space but I have made space. These are some lovely tips especially fitted storage under stairs and loft conversion.
We are about to start a major declutter to fit in line with my new slow intentional living. We live in a smallish house so space is not something we have much of and at the minute with all the clutter we feel suffocated. Great tips, I use the mirror one in our lounge and kitchen!
We already have an extension but would love some understairs storage
I’ve been meaning to convert the loft as that would really increase the amount of space. I’ve been so busy I haven’t had a chance to yet.
We definitely intend to convert our garage once we have saved up 🙂 can’t wait for extra space!
Great tips, I would love to convert my loft but I don’t think there is enough height. Kaz
Great tips. We have a storage cupboard under the stairs too.
I love the idea of having white walls, but with two little ones that would be a nightmare! I do keep thinking about a loft conversation though.
We converted our garage last year into a big play room, that really made a huge difference in terms of space!
Space is something we are very short of, and these ideas are really practical. Using the loft is something we need to do
My sister extended her kitchen by converting some her garage space. It’s amazing how beautiful a house can look with a little more space. It has really got me thinking on how I extend my little abode.
Some strong points and light paint is an absolute must. It did wonders in our house for making the rooms feel more spacious.
