Finding ways to motivate your child to learn will be great for their overall progression and will help them succeed. However, that’s easier said than done, especially for children who aren’t particularly fond of school. I have teamed up with an independent school in Surrey to share some advice to get you started.
Talk About School
One of the best ways to motivate your child to work hard at their education is to show them that you are genuinely interested. Talk to them about school and ask lots of open-ended questions to demonstrate that you care and want them to succeed. If they think that you have an active interest in their schooling, they might be more inclined to try harder to impress you.
Praise Hard Work
Rather than focussing on the end result, such as a grade on a test, it’s better to focus on your child’s efforts. As long as they are trying their best, it doesn’t matter if they don’t get the grades. With that said, be sure to praise your child when you notice them working hard on a piece of homework or revision for exams. Let them know that you are proud of them no matter what, because if they are afraid of failing, they won’t be confident or optimistic.
Make Learning Fun
Try to find fun learning activities for your child to take part in to show them that their education doesn’t have to be boring. Visit your local park and teach them about nature, create science experiments, and visit museums on rainy days.
Encourage Reading
Reading is great for your child’s learning because it allows them to explore different times and places and expand upon their general knowledge. It’s also fantastic for their language skills because it will help them develop a wider vocabulary and become familiar with different sentence structures.
