Imagination is important when it comes to a child’s overall development because it aids in the progression of various skills, from social and emotional to problem-solving. With that said, parents should look for ways to try and nurture their child’s imagination using the following tips from a private school in Surrey.
Reading
Books are a great way to foster your child’s imagination because it encourages them to visualise different characters and places and generally just opens their minds to new ideas. You could even encourage your child to make up their own stories or write book reviews, to help with their creative writing skills and vocabulary.
Outdoor Play
The opportunities for exploration and make-believe are endless when playing outdoors. Your child can pretend to be a pirate at the beach or an astronomer at night-time. There’s lots to learn and discover outdoors, which is a great way to inspire young people.
Limited Screen Time
It would be wise to try and reduce the amount of time your child is spending on their digital devices, as this is not an inspiring or imaginative use of their time. Instead, encourage them to do things that engage all of their senses and open their mind to new concepts.
Questions
When chatting with your child, be sure to ask them plenty of open-ended questions to encourage them to take their creative thinking to a deeper level. Doing so will invite them to engage their imaginations and will show them that you are genuinely interested in their thoughts and opinions, which will boost their self-esteem.
Arts & Crafts
Art is one of the most creative activities your child can engage in and it’s great for nurturing their imagination and allowing them to solve problems and try new things. It’s a chance for them to express their ideas in an inventive and liberating way.
