9 Tips You Need to Know When Decorating Your Child’s Bedroom | AD

Creating the perfect space for your little one is a fun experience. The bedroom is more than just another playroom for the kids. It’s also the space where your child will grow and develop. The bedroom is a safe haven, a miniature oasis. While decorating this space can be so much fun, it can also be challenging. So how can it be so challenging? Well, this needs to be a functional, yet lovely space that your child can love for years on end. It sounds like a tall order, doesn’t it?

Children change their interests and personalities at a very fast rate. They are growing after all. So it’s important to create a space that not only will reflect your childs’ interests now, but will still engage them (with a few modifications) for years to come.  It’s also important to completely understand what your child’s current wants are, their interest, and their needs. 

Putting this in mind, you’ll have a much easier time finding the right balance between making the space look cute, practical, and fairly timeless.  Here are a few tips on how you can create the perfect little bedroom for your child.

Try to keep things simple

When it comes to your child’s bedroom, you’re much better off trying to keep things fairly minimal. This is going to help with keeping things tidy. Look into keeping the décor simple. But the same can be said about furnishings as well, this needs to be simple too. Creating this small, yet simple canvas that’s completely neutral gives your child the chance to add to it so the space stays updated.

So how can you keep it simple? In what ways can a child’s bedroom appear neutral? Depending on the age of your child, you can still to using pale but neutral colours. This could be white and off-white shades, light brown, light grey, pale brown, and some hints of darker tones here and there. The décor for your space doesn’t need to be too big. You can use a floating shelf, maybe an IKEA cart, a toy chest, a cute but very unique bed for some character, and a rug for some added depth. When it comes to a child’s bedroom, just try to not overthink it or overspend.

The bedroom is the playroom, don’t forget that!

When decorating your little one’s room, you absolutely cannot forget about it being a playroom! Don’t skip out on the play aspect of your child’s room. Make sure that it’s fit for playing in. This can be as simple as having a toy chest and some large plushies on display, but it can even go further than this as well. Why not make a whimsical paradise out of it? You can add a little indoor swing, a mini hammock, a ball pit, a tiny bowling alley, a toy train set, really, the options are unlimited!

Up this can be upped as well. Since little ones have such a big imagination and they’re going to need some elements to accommodate this too. Why not add a little chalkboard or a mini art gallery? Some playrooms even have a tiny rock climbing wall. These are all a lot of fun, and it’s also a great way for them to burn some of their energy off before bedtime. Just make sure you make the bedroom a space that your child will enjoy, it’s not just a space to sleep but it’s also a space to play and learn.

Don’t be afraid to play with colour

A lot of children’s bedrooms look like they can straight out of IKEA, right? They’re all monochrome, they’re extremely minimalistic, and it can be questionable whether it’s an actual child’s room, right? Well, some parents like that, and some just downright hate it. So what’s there to do? Why not ask your child! Children love colour. They love it when a rainbow has splashed into their room.  But is going the rainbow way a good route? Children gain and lose interest at a very fast rate. Maybe today they’re interested in the colour neon green, but tomorrow it may be orange.

It’s best to not stick with just one colour. But, giving your child the chance to have multiple colours in their room not only means there won’t be commitment issues with colours, but it keeps the room happy and bright. Just look into furnishings and accessories for your child that look like a nice rainbow. Having a rainbow in the room can technically be considered a neutral setting. It has all the colours that are offered, so it’s much easier to have the same décor than needing to switch out colours your child is no longer interested in.

Bring in some timeless décor

Something that you’re definitely going to want to do is to have some décor that could be considered timeless. This can include items with some decorative accents on a shelf such as a Silver Crest Models train set, a plushy that they love, a nice family photo, but even a poster of something such as quotes, landscapes, or even animals. It’s important to add some timeless décor, as it gives a soft nudge that it belongs there. So, this is something you should definitely keep in mind.

Create a little workspace

When it comes to your little one, it’s important to have a little workspace in the bedroom. A work area is a must, this is going to teach them to sit and settle down whenever they’re sitting but it will help them with concentration too. This can be an area where they can do their arts and crafts, and when they’re older, this can be the same spot where they do their homework.  Having a quiet place to work and study is key, so getting this created while their still young is a major essential.

Make sure the room is safe and cosy

It’s important that your child has their own space where they can just break away from the world and have some alone time. Alone time is something that a child needs for their development, so having their own private space is already the best step in the right direction. Since your child will have their own space, it’s so important that this is not only cosy, but it’s safe as well. Make sure to lay out some rugs for your little one. This will give them some nice cushion in case they slip and fall. It’s also helpful to have the bed lowered to where it’s touching the floor. This way, if they fall, it won’t be such a hard fall wither. As every parent knows, ensure the furniture doesn’t have any sharp corners.

So, how can you cosy up the space for your child? A rug is not only a layer of safety for your child, but this can be a great layer of cosiness too. Having a soft plush fabric against your feet is just lovely, isn’t it? You can add some thick blankets to make the bed soft, and even plenty of pillows for that extra touch of cosiness. Children love plushies, so why not add these too? These can be nicely sat on the bed, or even piled up in the corner of the room.

Keep out screens

Children already have a large dependency on screens and it’s best to have a no-screen policy for children in their bedrooms. It’s best to wait until your child is older, such as a tween or teen before getting screen privileges in their room. This way, it will push towards healthy habits and not stay up too late.

Bring in touches of nature

Every room in the house should have a touch of nature, and the child’s bedroom is no exception to this at all. Having the outside brought in can really create a calming effect for a person, and yes, this includes children as well. The colours, scents, textures, sounds, and natural lighting has a way to create serenity.  So why not bring the outside in? You don’t need to do a lot in order to achieve this either.

You can bring in some paintings or photos of landscapes, this is going to give that push for children to enjoy nature. But you can still go much further than this! You can even bring some plants into your child’s room. This can be a great way to purify the air, but it will also teach them about responsibility.

Think about the acoustics

Thinking about the acoustics of a room sounds downright weird, doesn’t it? But it is true! Why not think of the acoustics? Children are loud, when children play, they’re extra loud. The volume of your child matters, even if the bedroom door is closed. SO it’s important to look into ways to soften the sounds. This can be done through certain fabrics for drapes, added wooden blinds, and even have carpet in the room.

While it can be a bit challenging creating the perfect space for your child, it’s all completely worth it in the end as your little one grows up in that space.
