Transitioning from Summer to School for Kids

*This is a collaborative post.

As summer’s warmth gives way to autumn’s crisp air, the back-to-school season brings a blend of anticipation and excitement. Kids and parents are returning to familiar routines, but they’re also starting fresh with new opportunities for growth and discovery. Our parent-tested transition tips will help your family reflect and rest as you journey from summertime to school time.

Discover how to prepare yourselves for the possibilities and opportunities ahead. There’s plenty to do, like shopping for kids’ shirts and toddler pants or creating new healthy meal plans. Use the following nuggets of wisdom from experienced parents. They’ll have you and your little ones ready for new beginnings!

1.     Have an End-of-Summer Celebration

Summer is all about positive vibes! Keep the fun going with an end-of-summer celebration. Saying goodbye to summer doesn’t have to be extravagant or expensive. Instead, focus your plans on what your kids enjoy about the season.

Invite friends over for a movie day or a backyard party. Have a family sleepover or take a weekend trip. Pack the family matching pajamas and take some fun photos! Relax and enjoy the time off before the school year begins.

2.     Gradually Begin Your Back-to-School Routine

You can make your mornings much smoother by gradually adjusting your child’s schedule for back-to-school. Try shifting bedtimes and wake-up times a week or two before school begins. Ask your kids to eat breakfast and get dressed at the same time as they would for class. Discuss the positive aspects of returning to class, like starting new activities or making new friends. Now is also an excellent time for parents to address their kids’ anxieties or concerns.

3.     Shop for School Supplies and Clothing

It’s fun to get new school supplies and clothes! Let your child pick their favorite colors for notebooks and folders. A capsule wardrobe is a wonderful way to organize new school outfits. Choose a few of your favorite soft tees, comfy pants and adorable neutral-colored dresses. Bright accent colors and unique prints are a fun way to express your little one’s personality.

Remember to grab new school shoes and cozy outerwear. Parents love toddler and baby hoodies crafted with soft materials like bamboo fabric. Try on items from last fall, including those comfy toddler hoodies or pull-on pants. If your child has outgrown their favorite clothes, now is the time to swap out tight clothing for new fits! Layers like sweaters and jackets will keep your kids prepared for any weather. Headbands and watches add a pop of color to stylish neutrals and basics.

4. Discuss Your Child’s School Schedule

Explain changes in your little one’s routine, including new teachers or first-time school subjects. Encourage a positive attitude, reminding your child that these changes help them learn and grow. Find inspiration in the new year, like starting school with a sibling or having a friend in class.  Finally, talk to your student about school rules and expectations for homework or classwork. A gentle reminder can help create a smoother transition back to the classroom.

5. Create a Healthy Back-to-School Meal Plan

A nutritious diet is essential for going back to school! Nourishing breakfasts and lunches will boost your child’s mood and energize them while they learn or play with friends. Shop together for balanced meals and snacks that taste great and offer plenty of vitamins. Consider tasty and easy-to-pack foods like celery sticks or carrots.

Fruit like mango cubes or apple slices are a delightful treat at lunchtime. Experiment with quick and filling wraps and sandwiches. Get creative with smoothies or trail mix! There are so many sweet and savory options to keep your kids full and delight their palate.

6.     Slowly Reduce Screen Time

Reducing screen time at the end of summer helps your child shift their focus back to academics. It’s also a great way to re-establish a balanced daily routine. Replace the streaming and games with back-to-school preparation and outdoor activities. Move indoors for a mini obstacle course if it’s hot outside. Now is a great time to enjoy summer fun before school begins! Go swimming, relax on a blanket in the backyard or hold a scavenger hunt with friends.

7.     Meet the Teacher

Most schools and daycares offer the opportunity to meet your child’s teacher before school begins. Take them to their classroom open house to let them get a feel for their new instructor and class. It’s encouraging to see old classmates or meet new friends! Getting familiar with the environment can help to ease first-day jitters.

8.     Take Time to Relax

There’s a lot to do when you’re going back to school! Balance your task list with relaxing family activities. Let your children read books on the couch in their favorite kids’ pajamas. Some kids will take naps to catch up on sleep. Hold a family game night or spend the entire day lounging in soft, cozy clothing. Balancing work and play helps maintain a positive attitude toward school. Your child will also have the energy needed to have a fantastic start to the year.

Create a Fun and Functional Routine for Back-to-School

As a parent, you can make back-to-school more upbeat and fun for your children! Enthusiasm and support will turn anticipation or anxiety into excitement and comfort. Prepare in advance and address changes to your child’s schedule. Fun, creative activities like back-to-school shopping and end-of-summer celebrations will create a smoother transition filled with greater ease and confidence.
