We love being members of the Asmodee board game club. We get to review loads of interesting new games with our family and friends. This time around we are reviewing The werewolves of millers hollow card game. This game is designed for large groups of eight to eighteen people, so perfect for parties or barbecues. It is a very compact game, the box would easily fit in your pocket, so is ideal for taking with you whenever you want to have a bit of fun with friends. The game is for ages 14 and over and each game lasts around half an hour.

The game sees the group split into two groups, werewolves and townsfolk. The werewolves are trying to kill the townsfolk and the townsfolk are trying to kill all of the werewolves.

Playing The Game

You need to choose a moderator for each game. This person does not play but ensures that everyone is abiding by the rules. The number of werewolves depends on the size of the group. The rest of the players will be townsfolk. There are a number of different townsfolk, each with different abilities. There is the witch, the fortune teller, the hunter, Cupido, the little girl, the sheriff who is elected by the other players and is then able to cast two votes and the thief. You can add some or all of these different personalities into each game. By swapping the characters around, you always have different elements at play which gives a different aspect on each game.

The Werewolves of Millers Hollow wolf and townsfolk cards

The moderator shuffles the appropriate amount of cards for the number of players. Each player is dealt one card and looks at it secretly to find their identity. The moderator then tells the town to fall asleep and all of the players close their eyes. Depending on the cards in play, the moderator then tells the thief to wake up who swaps their card if they want to and returns to sleep. Then Cupido is awoken and selects two players to fall in love, they are then touched by the moderator after Cupido has gone back to sleep, the lovers open their eyes to identify each other.

The game now begins. The fortune-teller is awoken and can choose to see one players card, shown by the moderator, then returns to sleep. The moderator then tells the werewolves to awake, they then choose a victim silently. The little girl can also open her eyes during this phase if they are spotted spying by the werewolves they instantly die of fright. The moderator then awakes the witch and reveals the victim. The witch can choose to poison another player as well, save the victim with a healing potion, or do nothing.

The Werewolves of Millers Hollow playing cards

The moderator then reveals the victim or victims and awakens the rest of the town. If the murdered player is the hunter, they can retaliate by killing another player before dying. If the victim is one of the lovers, the other lover dies immediately. Players that have died are not allowed to communicate with the remaining players. The remaining players try to decide who to lynch.

The werewolves try to mask themselves as townsfolk, the lovers try to protect each other while the little girl and fortune teller try to tip everyone off without revealing themselves which would be fatal in the next round. When everyone has decided who they think is a werewolf, the moderator gives the order to vote and everyone points to whoever they have chosen. The player with the most votes immediately dies and turns over their card. The moderator then tells the group that night has fallen and everyone must sleep. and the round begins again. The game ends when all of the werewolves are killed or all of the townsfolk have been murdered. The lovers win if they are the last two players remaining.

This game is great fun and you quickly get the hang of the rules. We can’t wait to have a get together to play it again. If you feel that you are getting a bit familiar with the game, there are now three other expansion packs available to give an additional dimension to the gameplay with different characters, events and buildings.

  1. I am very jealous to see that you are a member of a board game club and get to review games! We are a huge fan of board games and have regular game nights and we also have a big family game night once a month with the whole family! This game sounds like a lot of fun although probably a little complicated to start with until you get the hang of it! #MMBC

  2. I love board games but don’t think we’d ever have enough people to play this one! It sounds fun though 🙂
