Many might not know what ironmongery is. At least, I didn’t until recently as it is a word I had never used or heard of before. I used to say door hardware or door furniture but never ironmongery.

Whether you are on the same boat as me or already know what ironmongery is but would like to know more, today is your lucky day. Ever since I learnt about ironmongery, I’ve gone down a rabbit hole of all-things ironmongery and today I thought of sharing all I know with you.

So, what is ironmongery? For some professional input, I spoke to Ironmongery experts. They have worked in the industry since 1992, so I thought they would know a thing or two about the subject. Ironmongery Experts stock ironmongery, as you can tell by the name, and a variety of other products. They are a family-run business with plenty of experience and expertise.

Essential for any building

Ironmongery is an umbrella term for door hardware and door furniture – this includes door handles, door locks, door hinges… and the list goes on. Ironmongery is an essential part of every building. As Edinburgh World Heritage mentions, “Appropriate door furniture is a very important part of any historical building, especially as it is the first detail you focus on and touch as you enter a building.”

However, this applies to any building, not just historical buildings. This type of hardware is essential for both practical and decorative reasons. Doors handles and door hinges are crucial pieces of ironmongery that allow you to easily operate doors.

The origins of ironmongery

Originally, ironmongery was simply referred to as items that could be purchased at an ironmonger’s shop but the term has expanded over the years. As She Might Be Loved Explains, “the term has expanded to include items made of other metals, such as steel, brass and aluminium.”

Today, architectural ironmongery is the main type of ironmongery talked about. This relates to the products used to meet the architectural needs of a building (door handles, door hinges, etc). However, choosing the right type of ironmongery might prove to be a more difficult task than it seemed at first. Midlands Traveller recommends giving ironmongery some thought before purchasing as it comes in various designs, styles and finishes.
