To enrich your child’s communication, you can help them to build their vocabulary. By learning new words, they’ll be able to communicate more effectively with others and excel within their studies. To help, we have some tips from a prep school in Hampton on helping children with their vocabulary.
Use Words in Everyday Life
Learning and discovering new words is good but having the opportunity to use them in day-to-day life can help to make them a part of a child’s vocabulary. They will learn about the correct situations in which to use them and use them correctly.
A Word Wall
With each word that your child learns, add it to a poster for their wall. It will motivate them to learn more and ensure that they don’t forget them either.
Read Together
Books cover all different genres and fields which gives children the opportunity to learn about the world around them. As a result, they learn new words and the application of them. If your child’s starting to read, hearing you read will teach them words and help them when trying to blend them.
Spelling Challenge
Every week children get set spellings at school. Setting them the challenge to use their spelling words at least a certain number of times a day will help them at school and encourage them to use them every day.
Tools
Tools like word of the day can also introduce new words to your child’s vocabulary. You can download the app to their tablet or device. It’s a very simple, yet effective way of increasing their vocabulary. By the time a year has passed, they will have learned 365 words!
Synonym Challenge
Synonyms are words that have the same meaning as other words and are a great place to start when helping your child to build their vocabulary. They know the meaning already which makes the job of learning new words easier. This is something that they can do by creating their own little dictionary of synonyms.
