A heart shape cut out of a garden hedge.

If you are lucky enough to have a garden, you will no doubt recognise its many benefits to your property – particularly as the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has restricted a majority of people to their homes. You can use it for many different purposes, from being an additional recreational area in the fresh air to your own personal at-home gym. However, thanks to exposure to the elements, your garden does require a higher level of maintenance than the interior areas of your home to keep it looking its best. If you feel that your garden could do with a revamp, here are three useful tips for how you can show your garden some love this year.

1. Treat your lawn

A perfectly green, perfectly trimmed lawn provides a neat and chic backdrop to your property; however, maintaining this can require a lot of work, and thanks to weather fluctuations, invasive weeds, and being used as an impromptu football pitch by your kids, your lawn can quickly become scraggly and tired. To refresh your lawn, spend some time treating it. Regular mowing, particularly in the summer months, will prevent your lawn from becoming overgrown and unmanageable. Use a scarifier to remove invasive weeds and moss, leaving behind only the grass that makes up the lawn. Then, apply a treatment to feed your lawn essential nutrients and fertiliser to improve its growth quality.

2. Clean your pond

If you are lucky enough to have a pond, you probably spend hours in summer relaxing beside it and watching the various different insects and wildlife visiting to use it. However, without regular maintenance, your pond can quickly become a sludge-filled pool of stagnant water that no wildlife wants to visit. Use a rake or net to regularly remove large debris, such as leaves, that has fallen into your pond before it can rot and poison the water. You should also invest in a high-performance water filtration system, such as those found on Water-garden.co.uk, which will provide your pond with constant filtration and ensure that it remains clean and safe for aquatic plants and wildlife.

3. Revamp your garden furniture

Your garden no doubt includes some form of garden furniture, such as a table and chairs set so that you can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air, or a climbing frame and swing set for your kids. However, constant exposure to the elements may have left your garden features looking less than fresh and potentially dangerous, with faded paintwork and rotted wood. Take some time to repaint and repair your existing furniture; alternatively, you might decide to invest in a new set. If you decide to do this, look for garden furniture made from a weather-resistant material, such as waterproof rattan.

To ensure that your new or revamped garden furniture stays in this great condition, you should then cover it with a tarpaulin when not in use. For further protection from the elements, consider storing it indoors, in a garage, for instance, over the harsher winter months. You can then bring this out when the weather improves and feel rest assured that it is perfectly good to use straight away.
