Over the past few months, we have received some really great family games as part of the blogger board game club. We recently shared our review of Colt Express which we all enjoyed and today we are sharing a new review of Discover Lands unknown.
Discover Lands Unknown is an adventure game with a recommended playing age of 12+ years. Every game available is unique with different components inside. The aim of the game is to survive in the wilderness at all costs. Search for food, water and tools to help raise the odds of your survival. You can play co-operatively and help out others in need or look out for number one!
Jayden did start this game with us, but only just turning 9 he did find this game a little complex and soon lost interest and got sidetracked by squirrels in our garden! So my husband Craig and I played together.
Getting Started With The Game
Firstly you have to pop the playing pieces from the cards. There are a lot! So you may want to get yourself your favourite tipple from the fridge to make it a little more bearable! There are also some handy instructions to help you along the way.
There are 6 different terrains but you will only get two terrains in your box. There are also 36 different characters in total and you will get 12 of those characters in your edition. The characters each have their own backgrounds and personalities.
Choosing Your Character
Each player chooses two characters. Each character is beautifully illustrated. They all have their own backgrounds and personalities which really helps to build an image of what the individual would be like in real life.
You set up your terrain map and include the compass token provided. The terrain guide will give you all of the information that you need for your adventure, such as background facts and cards needed for gameplay.
Using the scenario cards you will work your way through each stage, making decisions that will determine how successful you will be.
Everyone gets a cardboard dial that helps you to track stamina and wounds. Stamina is needed to move around the board. You will come across obstacles and different terrains that will use different amounts of stamina. Stamina can be collected on each turn via the night cards.
Survival, Actions And Resources
Sometimes you will have to fight for survival. Each opponent has a grey and red value. Every time you fight you roll the red and grey dice. Roll equal or above the grey and you will give them a wound. Roll below the red value and you will become wounded. If you receive 4 wounds then it’s game over for you.
There are lots of resources that can be collected along the way. These resources can be used to obtain a project card that rewards you with items such as a pickaxe or a fishing net to help in the different scenarios you may face further on.
To round things up without waffling on too much, you will spend this game taking actions, gathering useful resources, discovering landmarks and finding new territories. All whilst helping others survive or by going it alone! A fab pass time for older children or a fun twist on a date night at home.
