I really can’t believe we are in August already! It doesn’t seem all that long ago that I was writing out my previous post of jobs in the garden. Time is just flying by. I spend most of my spare time (when I get some) out in the garden and there is always something to keep me busy. Here is a list of useful to-dos for this month.
Deadhead bedding plants to ensure they continue to bloom throughout autumn and prune summer-flowering shrubs once they have finished.
Our lavender has just had a trim to prevent it from becoming leggy next year and the climbing roses have been pruned too.
Keep all of your pots well watered and add feed every 2-3 weeks and don’t forget to top up your birdbaths if you have one. This intense heat we have been having will soon dry them out.
The lawns should pick up this month with more showers so no need for treatment. Don’t forget to raise your blade on your mower when you cut the lawn next.
Damp down the inside of greenhouses on hot days to help increase humidity.
I think having the use of a reliable hose is so handy to have in a garden. I have recently been putting the Hozelock Auto Reel With 40-Metre Hose to the test and am so impressed! A major bugbear of mine is unravelling the hose only to spend most of your time trying to get the kinks out! And then there’s the reeling it all back in afterwards.
Thanks to the the Hozelock Auto Reel, I will never have these problems again. The 4o metres of 3 layered premium hose is anti-kink. Once the unit is mounted to the wall you can pull out as much hose as you need. The hose locks until you require more and you can do so by gently pulling the hose to release the lock. I also love the 180-degree pivot so I can get to hard to reach places with ease. Once I have finished watering the unit simply auto reels the hose back up which saves so much time!
You can take the unit off the wall and keep it indoors during the winter and there is an anti-theft padlock system to deter it from going walkies. Another fab feature is the child lock so you can rest assured that it cannot be messed with by little hands. It’s by far one of the best accessories I now have for the garden.
If you are growing runner beans pinch the tops as soon as they reach the top of their supports to encourage more beans to grow down the sides.
Carrots that were sewn in spring will be ready to harvest now.
Courgettes will be more than ready to pick too.
Have a good weed to make sure they don’t pinch the nutrients of your produce.
What are you up to in your garden?
