Upcycling An Old Light

I love a good upcycling project. I’ve had this candelabra style light for quite some time now and as you can see by the design, it is very Christmasy. The light itself gives off a cosy glow at night and works off a timer so turns on at dusk and goes off just in time for bed. I thought it’s a shame to only use it once a year, so I needed to make it fit in with my living room colours and then I could use it all year round. So I made a start!

I thought I would go with some kind of nature theme. I bought these cute little butterflies and a dandelion clock to replace the stags and fir trees. They cost around £3.00 altogether.

What I Used

PlastiKote Spray Paint – Sky blue

Plastikote Spray Paint – Flat white

Glue gun

Masking Tape

Firstly I took off the existing shapes with a pair of pliers. Once that was done I gave it a rub down with a scourer and covered up the bulbs with some masking tape.

After I made sure the red paint was all covered, I left it to dry and moved on to the butterflies and dandelion clock white.

Finally, I adhered the finished pieces to the light with a glue gun.

My new light! Now it matches in perfectly with the rest of our living room and no longer gathers dust in the outhouse.

I’m terrible at anything like this, so I’m always really impressed with what other people can do. I love that you can use it all year round now – and if it’s okay to say so, I actually like it a little bit more than the Christmas version!

That is such a good idea and looks absolutely brilliant. What a great idea to up cycle something that generally only comes out once a year. I think you’ve done a fantastic job!

Hi Jayne, I love what you’ve done with your Christmas light and your pretty pink glue gun! And you say you’re not a girly girl? I am hopeless at upcycling, it never occurs to me to create something new out of something old and the thought of sanding and painting something is enough to make me cry. My husband loves it though, he says it’s good therapy.

Such a good idea to upcycle Christmas stuff. It seems a shame that most of it only gets used for a couple of weeks a year.

What a lovely idea and I love the shade of blue that you’ve used. It’s so great to be able to use items all year round and not just seasonally 🙂
